Is the Gordie Howe International Bridge open?

Yes. The Gordie Howe International Bridge opened to vehicle traffic on July 27, 2026. The bridge authority says it operates 24 hours a day and accepts passenger vehicles as well as commercial traffic.

Use the bridge authority’s official FAQ and trip-planning pages for current toll, access, lane, inspection, multi-use path, and restriction information. Do not rely on an older construction article for a travel-day decision.

Where the bridge fits

The new crossing connects the Detroit and Windsor regions through new ports of entry and highway approaches. It does not mean every trip should automatically use it.

The best crossing for a passenger transfer depends on:

  • Exact pickup and destination—not only the city names
  • Current approach roads, closures, and traffic
  • Port operating conditions and inspection queues
  • Tolls and vehicle eligibility
  • Passenger deadline, luggage, stops, and return plan

Metro Elite reviews the planned crossing for a confirmed trip, but dispatch cannot guarantee which lane will move fastest or how long inspection will take.

Vehicle passengers still complete border inspection

Every traveller must have valid documents, make required declarations, and be admissible in the destination country. Opening a new bridge does not change that responsibility.

Keep documents accessible before reaching the port of entry. Border authorities can direct a vehicle to additional inspection, and the chauffeur must follow officer instructions. For traveller preparation, use the Canada–U.S. border crossing guide and what do I need to visit Canada.

Walking and cycling

The bridge includes a multi-use path, but path operations are separate from ordinary vehicle travel. Before trying to walk or cycle, verify the official opening status, hours, access points, border-inspection procedure, closures, permitted equipment, and first- and final-mile route.

Do not substitute the Ambassador Bridge or Detroit–Windsor Tunnel as an ordinary pedestrian route. Read can you walk to Windsor from Detroit for the complete planning checklist.

Tolls, routes, and live conditions

Check the official operator for current toll rates, payment methods, lane information, restrictions, and traffic notices. Those details are changeable and should not be copied from an outdated online summary.

For a quoted private transfer, ask whether tolls and border waiting treatment are included in the confirmed fare. The booking should identify the pickup and destination doors, while allowing dispatch to respond to current crossing conditions where lawful and practical.

Planning a Detroit–Windsor transfer

Provide:

  • Exact Detroit or Windsor pickup and destination
  • Date, passenger-ready time, and any hard deadline
  • Passengers, luggage, child seats, mobility devices, and oversized items
  • Flight, train, event, appointment, or hotel details
  • Requested stops and return plan
  • Reachable mobile number

Compare the full options in how to get from Detroit to Windsor or how to get from Windsor to Detroit. If a direct ride is the right fit, request a route-specific quote rather than assuming the newest crossing is automatically the fastest.
