What documents do you need to visit Canada?

What you need to visit Canada depends on citizenship, immigration status, age, purpose of travel, how you arrive, and whether children are travelling. Check every traveller separately using current Canadian government guidance.

The Canada Border Services Agency’s official travel-documents page explains the identification expected at the border and provides links for different traveller categories. Carry the original, valid documents that apply to you. Do not rely on a photo of a document or another traveller’s experience.

Metro Elite can plan transportation and remind passengers to bring documents. It cannot determine eligibility, approve a passport or visa, or guarantee entry.

A practical land-border checklist

Before departure, confirm:

  • Valid travel documents for every adult and child
  • Any visa or electronic authorization that applies to the traveller and mode of entry
  • Proof connected to residency or status when applicable
  • The address, contact, and purpose of the Canadian visit
  • Required declarations for goods, food, alcohol, tobacco, currency, gifts, or commercial items
  • Consent or custody documents when a child travels without every parent or legal guardian
  • Medication, prescription, and health-document needs
  • A return or onward travel plan

Rules can change, and an apparently similar passenger can have different requirements. Use the official IRCC entry-requirements tool for the current traveller-specific starting point.

What happens at a land border

Follow signs to primary inspection, stop where directed, and present the requested identification. An officer may ask about citizenship or status, destination, length and purpose of stay, accompanying people, goods, and return plans. Answer accurately and be prepared for additional inspection.

The final decision belongs to Canadian border authorities. A chauffeur cannot answer for a passenger, hold prohibited items, or make a traveller admissible.

Travelling with children

Each child needs the documents required for that child. When a parent or guardian is absent, carry appropriate consent and custody information. Names, dates, and itinerary details should be consistent and easy to explain.

Because family situations differ, check the current official government guidance before travel. Do not treat a generic online checklist as legal advice.

What your driver needs

For a private trip, provide transportation details—not sensitive document images unless a lawful process specifically requires them:

  • Exact pickup and Canadian destination
  • Date, passenger-ready time, and hard deadlines
  • Number of adults and children
  • Luggage, mobility devices, and child-seat needs
  • Requested stops and return plan
  • A reachable mobile number

All passengers should be ready together with documents in hand before pickup. Unplanned stops, missing documents, or an incomplete passenger list can disrupt the timing.

Choose the complete route

From Detroit, Windsor is the most direct Canadian city destination for many travellers, but the correct crossing and final drive depend on the exact address and current conditions. Read how to get from Detroit to Windsor and the broader Canada–U.S. border crossing guide.

Request a quote if a private cross-border vehicle is the right fit. The route, timing, passengers, luggage, and fare are confirmed before booking; document validity and admissibility remain the passenger’s responsibility.
